Essence of Tranquility – Safford, AZ

The small town of Safford, Arizona is often overlooked as a tourist destination. When you think of the desert, cactus, rattlesnakes, and cowboys probably aren’t the first things that come to mind. But Safford is all of those things, and so much more. The tiny town southeast of Tucson is home to The Essence of Tranquility spa, an oasis tucked away in the beautiful Galiuro Mountains.

The spa offers three different packages for guests who are looking for some time away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Each package comes with lodging (you can choose between a suite or yurt), spa services, daily breakfast and dinner, as well as access to hiking trails and other outdoor activities throughout your stay. We recently paid a visit to see if this was somewhere we would want to spend our vacation — Here’s what we discovered…

Hiking Is The Best Part Of Visiting Essence of Tranquility

The spa may be the main attraction, but hiking is the best part of visiting Essence of Tranquility. The trails are well-maintained and easy to follow. The great thing about hiking at higher elevations is that it never gets too hot; even in the summer, the trails are cool and comfortable. And the views are breathtaking. You can actually see nearby Safford from the heights of the Galiuro Mountains.

The hike we took was about six miles and took about three hours to complete. It’s a good pace for most hikers. Along the way, you’ll see beautiful cacti, birds, and possibly a few lizards. The path winds through the mountains, along a few cliff sides, and past an old mine. The best part about the hike is that you are rewarded with a panoramic view of the valley from the top of the mountain.

A note about the weather

Safford, Arizona is no stranger to extreme weather conditions. The area experiences hot summers with temperatures often reaching over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. They appreciate the sunny days and say that the weather is a great conversation starter.

The food at Essence of Tranquility is truly outstanding. The daily specials vary, but the menu usually includes a soup, a salad, a main course, and a dessert. The rooms at Essence of Tranquility are pretty standard for a desert yurt. They have a clean, desert vibe with soft, neutral colors and Native American artwork. Each room has a fireplace, a small kitchen, and a bathroom with a garden tub. The beds are covered in thick, cozy blankets and the pillows are very comfortable. The fireplaces are a nice touch but don’t expect much heat.

They work like a charm, though, when placed in front of an open window. The bathrooms are pretty standard, although the garden tubs are nice. They have a low-flow water system, so you will have to wait a minute or two for the tub to fill up. The rooms are nice enough, but they’re nothing special. They’re well-maintained, clean, and comfortable. But they’re nothing special.

The Spa Menu Is Short But Solid

The spa menu is short but solid. It includes a variety of massages (Swedish, hot stone, hot oil, and couples), facials, body wraps, and manicures and pedicures. Our Experience: We both chose the 90-minute hot oil massage. It was the best massage either of us have ever had. The warm oil relaxed our muscles and melted away our worries.

The spa workers are extremely professional and experienced. They know exactly where to apply pressure and when to ease off. The spa is beautiful and quiet. There are soft music, warm lights, and soothing scents that make you feel at home. The staff is friendly and accommodating.
